It is an important early utopian work. The work was written in Italian inshortly after Campanella's imprisonment for heresy and sedition. A Latin version was written in – and published in Frankfurt in /5(3). During Campanella’s prison term of 27 years, he also wrote lyric poems, of which only a few survive—in Scelta (; “Selections”).

Considered by some critics to be the most original poetry in Italian literature of the period, the collection includes madrigals, sonnets, conventional love poems. La città del sole is one of many books written by Tommaso Campanella—philosopher, scientist, astrologer, and poet—while imprisoned in Naples for his part in rebellion against the Spanish and ecclesiastical authorities who ruled his native Calabria.

Campanella's first printed work, Philosophia sensibus demonstrata, was written when the twenty-one year old Dominican friar was living in a monastery in the Calabrian village of Altomonte.
